2009 QuiltFest Winners

Seventy two quilts and twenty six art pieces were in competition for the top honors at this year’s QuiltFest Contests. Cash prizes totaling $4,000 were awarded to winners in the three contests. Organizers, Ohio County Historical Society and Sunshine Stitchers, are proud to announce the winning entries.

The coveted Best Quilt in Show was awarded to “Cinnamon Star” by Julie Yaeger Lambert of Erlanger, Kentucky. The pieced medallion quilt was notable for the exquisite machine quilting which was done on a domestic Bernina machine.

First Place prizes were awarded to: Diana Schmitt Barry of Vevay, for her “Amish and Asian” pieced quilt; Sandy Broering of Rising Sun, for her “Bead-i-ful Brocades” crazy quilt which was embellished by her daughter Linda Thomas, also of Rising Sun; Helen Hounshell of Patriot for her machine quilted “Red and Black Lone Star”; Judy Huffman from Hamilton, Ohio took first place in two categories: her “Welcome” quilt took top honors in the hand quilting category and her “Days Past”quilt topped the appliqué category; Mixed Techniques first prize was carried away by Diane Livezey of Edgewood, Kentucky with “My Secret Garden”.

First Place winner in the Art Quilt Contest was “ColorPlay III” a raw edge appliquéd piece by Anne Lullie from Lake in the Hills, Illinois. Second Place was won by Sandra “Charlie” Charles of Rising Sun, Indiana with her “Blue Chair”.

Oscar River’s photograph “Heirloom” was chosen for top honors in the all media Art Contest, and Rosemary Butterbaugh took Second Place with her mixed media “Quilt Sampler”. Both winners are artists in Rising Sun, Indiana.
