March 1st is Entry Deadline

If you are planning to enter the Rising Sun QuiltFest competition, please mail or bring your entry forms to the Ohio County Historical Society, 212 S. Walnut, Rising Sun, IN 47040 no later than March 1st. Forms and instructions can be found on our “Contest Entry Form” page or they may be picked up at the Historical Society.
Confirmation of acceptance and instructions for dropping off your entries will be sent out no later than March 10th. Entries will be accepted at the Historical Society between March 14th and March 21st. Items can be picked up on Sunday after 4:30 at the show or during the following week at the Historical Society, 212 S. Walnut Street, Rising Sun, IN. 812-438-4915
Best of Show will win $500, 1st Place in each category will receive $100 and 2nd place will take home $50. Entries will be accepted in traditional quilts, art quilts, artwork in any medium with a quilt or quilting theme, both traditional cloth and artist dolls, as well as bears and other animals. There is a special Youth category for quilters under 18 and a non-judged, display only category as space permits.
You are invited to attend the Queen City Doll Club Luncheon to be held on Saturday at the Grand Victoria Buffet. There will be door prizes and a speaker. Cost is $17 for members, $20 for guests and includes admission to the show. Following the luncheon, there will be a free lecture in the Grand Theatre on small scale quilts by Sheila Holland. QuiltFest 2010 Winners Announced!

Seventy nine entries competed for the top honors at this year’s QuiltFest. Organizers, Ohio County Historical Society and Sunshine Stitchers, are proud to announce the winning entries.
The coveted Best in Show Quilt was awarded to “Stellar Legacy” by Diane Livezey of Edgewood, Kentucky. In addition, Diane was the first place winner in the Mixed Techniques category with “Seredipitous” which was also the People’s Choice. A Special Judges Recognition was given to “Pheasant” by Suzanne Peters of Union, KY by NQA certified judge, Linda Luggen of Cincinnati, OH.
First Place prizes were awarded to: Lois Latscha of Rising Sun, IN for her appliqué entry “Wandering Leaf”; Jullie Yeager Lambert of Erlanger, KY for her pieced quilt “Bodacious Feathered Star” and her machine quilted “Feathered Pineaple”; Linda Thomas and Sandy Broering for their “Bead-i-ful Brocades” novelty crazy quilt; Betty Ann Pavy, Rising Sun, IN for her hand quilted entry “Golden Rectangle”; Debbie Scudder of Dillsboro, IN won with her wearable art purse
Honorable Mentions were received by Robbie Porter of Batavia, Joan Morrison of Cincinnati, Betty Ann Pavy and Karen Gillard of Rising Sun, and Wanda Benzing of Patriot.
First place winner in the Art Quilt Contest was “Sea Glass Reflections” by Robbie Porter of Cincinnati, OH. Robbie was also the second place winner with “Perfect Symmetry
Martha Bladen from Vevay, Indian took first place in the art contest with her photography collage “Archiquilture”, second place art was a crazy quilt glass plate by Sherry Howard of Rising Sun and third place art was won by Jodie Cole-Mulle of Rising Sun with her painted fabric “Morning Whispers”.
The bear contest winner was a needle punched “Chipmunk” by Linda Berkemeier, Crittenden, KY and second place was taken by Rising Sun’s Lois Latscha’s with “Patches”. Pat Statzer, Cincinnati, OH placed first in the doll contest with “Sally”; Elizabeth Marten also of Cincinnati placed second with her doll “Glenda”. An honorable mention was received by Sonja Bryer of Bellbrook, OH.
Pamela Traynham of Chesapeake, VA won first place with her doll quilt “Shining Star” and Carolyn Tully of Osgood, IN took second place with her doll quilt “Gracie’s Flower Garden”. Honorable mentions in doll quilts were received by Nancy Bendickson, Tipp City and Marsha Schauer, Hamilton, OH.

Students to Exhibit Quilts at QuiltFest

Ohio County Elementary School Art Classes grades K-4 will have a special exhibit at Rising Sun QuiltFest on April 9, 10 & 11. In a program to introduce quilting to youngsters, students in Miss Paeth’s art classes participated in making blocks which will be bound and connected to form large quilts. The quilts will hang as a special exhibit at QuiltFest. Rising Sun Regional Foundation funded this project as part of a grant to the Ohio County Historical Society.
QuiltFest will be held in the Grand Victoria Grand Theatre. In addition to a Traditional Quilt Contest which includes Wearable Art, there will be competition in Art Quilts, Art, Dolls, Bears and Doll Quilts. If you wish to enter the contest, call Susan Bengtson at 290-4959 to see if entries are still being accepted.
More than 15 vendors from Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia will participate, along with classes, free lectures and demonstrations and a food concession prepared by Thelma Miller. QuiltFest is presented by the Ohio County Historical Society and Sunshine Stitchers.
Hours are Friday 10-5, Saturday 10-6 and Sunday noon-4. Daily admission to the quilt show and contest is $5 or visitors may purchase a money-saving Passport for $10 which will admit them to the quilt show as well as four participating historic sites with quilt and textile exhibits of interest.

Rising Sun QuiltFest is returning to Rising Sun, Indiana April 9, 10 and 11, 2010 including quilt and textile exhibits hosted by neighboring historic sites. Hillforest Victorian House Museum, Veraestau Historic Site, Ohio County Historical Society and Switzerland County Historical Museums will each have exhibits of interest to quilt enthusiasts traveling to this area. Visitors can purchase a money-saving Passport for $10 which will be good for admission to the participating venues through April 25, 2010.
QuiltFest will be held at the Grand Victoria Grand Theatre in Rising Sun. Hours are Friday 10-5, Saturday 10-6 and Sunday noon-4. Daily admission to the quilt show and contest is $5 or visitors may purchase the Passport which will admit them to the quilt show as well as all four historic sites.
Quilt Fest organizers, Ohio County Historical Society and Sunshine Stitchers, are pleased to offer classes by studio artist Terry White, doll artist Cynthia DeHoff and Doll Clothier Mary K. Workman. Free lectures will be presented on Saturday at 11 am and 2 pm. Technique demonstrations will be ongoing daily and vendors from Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia will round out the fun. A food concession will also be available each day.

Entry Deadline Extended
The deadline for entering all Rising Sun QuiltFest contests has been extended to March 10, 2010. You still have almost a month to finish up your entries before you bring them in.

QUILT CONTEST 2010
DEADLINE: MARCH 1, 2010
Entry fee: $10.00 per entry
Open to quilters 18 years of age and older. Quilt must have been completed since 2002.
Size can be no smaller than 12” x 12” or larger than 120”. All entries must have a 3 inch hanging sleeve securely affixed to the top back for hanging, and must be available from April 1st to April 12th 2010. All entries must have the name, address, and complete contact information affixed securely to the back. Select only one entry category per quilt. Judge reserves the right to change categories.
Prizes will be awarded for:
Best of Show Appliqué Pieced
Mixed Techniques Hand quilted Machine quilted
Novelty (unquilted) Wearable Art
To enter send photos, slides, or CD of your quilt and a brief explanation of the techniques used and subject matter, and a self-addressed stamped envelope. OCHS will retain slides, games, photos, or CD for their files of accepted quilts. Notice of acceptance will be by March 10th, 2010. Accepted quilts must be delivered no later than April 1, 2010. Quilts must be marked with the price if for sale or NFS if not for sale. Insurance coverage must be provided by the quilter for their entries. Whereas due care will be taken to protect your quilt, OCHS cannot accept responsibility for any damage.
